Australian field hockey player Tom Craig was arrested in Paris just two days after Team Australia was eliminated from the Olympics. According to TMZ, Craig was arrested due to allegedly buying cocaine from a “dealer in the streets,” who was also arrested.
The Australian Olympic Committee released a statement saying “The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has confirmed an Australian hockey team member is in custody after being arrested in Paris on August 6th. No charges have been laid. The AOC is continuing to make inquiries and arrange support for the Team member.”
Craig spoke about the arrest to reporters on Wednesday, saying “I’d firstly like to apologize for what has occurred over the past 24 hours. I made a terrible mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions.”
He added, “My actions are my own and in no way reflect the values of my family, my teammates, my friends, my sport and the Australian Olympic Committee. I’ve embarrassed you all and I’m truly sorry.”
According to SF Gate, the Australian Olympic Committee also released a statement from their 2024 team leader Anna Meares, who said “I cannot condone what Tom has done. He is a good person who made a bad decision. But there are consequences for decisions like this. He has apologized, shown remorse, he has owned up to his mistake, and we will support him if he needs help.”
The outlet also notes that a “criminal warning” was given following Craig’s arrest, and that “no fine was imposed.”
