Welcome to The Fitz Feed. Or, maybe that should be Le Fitz Feed since we’re in Paris? Longtime KCRA 3 and Olympic viewers may remember that for many, many Olympics I had an Olympic blog called “Deirdre’s Diary.” It started in 2000 at the Sydney Olympics. In truth, I was blogging before blogging was cool. Paris is my 11th Olympics for Hearst Television. It felt like it was time for a refresh.But, TV people love alliteration so we’ve moved from the D’s to the F’s and settled on The Fitz Feed. Back in the day, the Olympic blog was a great place to put content that didn’t make it on TV. That was before social media. So, this will be a place to get the story behind some of our stories. These are the stories you usually have to buy me a drink to hear. These are the stories of how we actually get television done. Spoiler: it’s often not pretty but it’s usually entertaining.Day one for the Olympic Team is promo day. Hearst Television owns 30ish TV stations. Our crew of 10 people do what’s called “group coverage.” We gather content for all of those stations and front it live for each of them. You’ll see me in Sacramento highlighting California athletes. People in Baltimore, Boston, Orlando and Albuquerque will also see me on their TVs. On promo day, we tape lines that end up in commercials to promote the coverage on those stations. You need three things for a successful promo day: Good weather. (It rained today.) An iconic location. (It’s Paris, duh.) And the ability to think clearly to get the lines right in a short period of time. (Not really happening while jetlagged and enveloped in Olympic anxiety).But, we got it done. Enough of what I said was coherent, so cross out “promo day” on the Olympic to-do list. Watch the video above to get a feel of what we did.
