MANDAN, N.D. (KFYR) – The Olympics get underway soon and gymnastics is one of the most watched events.
Dakota Star Gymnastics in Mandan sees increased enrollment around the Olympics.
Gymnasts tumble for years to get the chance to compete in the Olympics and along that journey, they build their love for the sport.
“An amazing feeling just flipping through…I can’t even describe it. It’s just the best feeling in the world,” said Jericah Lockner, gymnast and assistant competitive coach.
She said gymnastics is a perfect 10 as far as sports go and while not everyone sees it that way, the Olympics is when it gets its glory.
“Gymnastics just peaks, like everybody wants to do gymnastics. So like our enrollment numbers are so good right now. And we have no wait lists and we are at like more capacity that we can have more kids come,” said Lori Lockner operations supervisor.
Lockner said class enrollment numbers will start to fly higher than Simone Biles.
To accommodate that, DSG is adding more classes beginning in September.
“I think that’s because they are quite like superheroes. It’s almost unhuman to do all of these different things. So it gets people imagining the capabilities of the human and it’s exciting,” said Mike St. Helene competitive head coach.
“Because I feel like I could be one of them someday,” said competitive gymnast Gretchen Britton.
Britton said they motivate her to work harder and dream big.
“They can do it. They wowed me,” said Britton.
It takes the girls a lot of training and conditioning to compete like the professionals.
“Like I’ve watched Simone, like all three Olympic trials and she’s really at her best now. So it’s really cool just seeing them throughout the years. I feel like I’m with them along with their small little journey that they’re on,” said Jericah Lockner.
She said during her gymnastics journey she looks up to the Olympians and she hopes to instill that confidence into the athletes she trains.
