  • The Brit pipped Hayden Wilde with 2.5km left in dramatic Olympic win in July
  • He left it even later in Boston overtaking the New Zealand man at last corner
  • But Wilde was left raging as Yee crossed his arms in celebration with metres left

British triathlon star Alex Yee has repeated his Olympic trick of overtaking fierce rival Hayden Wilde at the last minute to seal victory – but this time he celebrated before even crossing the line.

The GB man pipped his New Zealand opponent with just over 2km of a gruelling triathlon remaining in Paris last month, overturning a 14-second deficit to seal gold.

The sudden surge seemed to come out of nowhere as the 26-year-old sprinted clear of his fellow athlete to upgrade the silver he won in Tokyo three years prior.

A thoroughly fed-up Wilde, left panting in the scorching Paris heat as he reflected on his loss, might have been forgiven for thinking the last-gasp comeback was a one-off.

But he would have been wrong – as Yee caused lightning to strike twice yesterday, this time leaving it even later to seal victory at the Boston supertri.

As the Brit approached the line, he crossed his arms in celebration before breaking the tape, arms still folded, and staring into the camera.

Wilde, who followed Yee over the finish line just one second later, was not best pleased with his adversary’s behaviour, raising his arms incredulously and shaking his head.

Either way, the Englishman can now bask in the glory of another victory in a growing rivalry between the pair after a tactically-astute display in the States.

The supertri consists of a three triathlons in a row and Yee found himself setting the pace from the first cycling leg – the second leg of the contest.

By the time the athletes were running for the first time, the eventual podium-placers of Yee, Wilde and Frenchman Dorian Coninx had separated themselves from the chasing pack.

During the second triathlon, the Brit fell back slightly as Vincent Luis, also from France, surged into a lead after a strong swim.

Yee soon came back into it once again, however, and as the competitors went into the final stage, there were six athletes fighting it out.

And the group stayed together until the final run, which the Englishman started badly after appearing to drop his bike.

With Wilde in front, Yee gritted his teeth and put on the after burners, only overtaking the New Zealand man as they went round the last corner.

A quick look over the shoulder as the pair approached the tape, and Yee whipped out his confident celebration, continuing to stare into the camera seconds after the race had finished, with Wilde left fuming in the background.

The Brit also won bronze in the team triathlon event in Paris, after he and teammates Georgia Taylor-Brown, Samuel Dickinson and Beth Potter were denied silver following a photo replay.
