Soon to be Chelsea striker Samu Omorodion is an Olympic champion after Spain beat France in tonight’s men’s tournament final at the Paris Games.
It was a most dramatic way to close out the summer international season just as the club season’s set to start once again, with France mounting a furious comeback from two goals down in regulation, only to lose it in extra-time.
France took the lead early on a bit of a goalkeeping error, but Spain would score three times in the space of ten minutes, to almost settle the outcome before the half-hour mark. But France came back in the final ten minutes, getting a nice home-field advantage call on a penalty from VAR late on as well. But Spain were undaunted and got the job done in the bonus period, completing their Euros and Olympics double this summer.
Omorodion, who didn’t dress for the final presumably due to his impending Chelsea transfer, can compare winners’ medals with Marc Cucurella once he gets here! Samu started one match at the tournament, and scored in that as well. Barcelona’s Fermín López paced Spain with six goals.
In related Olympics news, Emma Hayes and the USWNT go for gold tomorrow against Brazil. Should be a good one!
