Even if Tom Schaar had arrived in Portland for this weekend’s Rockstar Energy Open without a silver medal from the Paris Olympics, his resume would already make him one of skateboarding’s biggest names.

He landed the first 1080, the three-rotation aerial trick that had been something of a holy grail within the sport, when he was 12. Since then Schaar, now 24, has collected X Games medals and acclaim for his ability to skate everything from streets to big air.
