USWNT’s performance in women’s football at the Olympics
Atlanta 1996, in what was a home Games for the USA, marked the introduction of women’s football at the Olympics. It was an emphatic run from the hosts, who just about emerged from the semi-finals against Norway courtesy of a rare golden goal, before beating the Republic of China 2-1 in the final to win gold.
They looked to repeat that feat in 2000, making it to the final where Norway would await them. Coincidentally enough, four years after that semi-final, this game would be settled by a golden goal once more – this time in favour of the Norwegians, who clinched gold after 102 minutes of relentless football, winning 3-2.
The USWNT would return to winning ways four years later, at Athens 2004, in what was the start of a flawless run of Olympic campaigns. Beijing 2008 would see them go back-to-back, before completing a hat-trick of golds at London 2012.
But that was to be their final golden outing to date, exiting at the quarter-final stage in Rio before a third-placed finish in Tokyo three years ago.
