“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” will be taking a little time off as summer ends, and returning with new episodes on Sept. 8. But the last episode to air before the break, on Aug. 18, included another gentle needle at something Portland-related.
In this case, the “And Now” segment that airs between the opening bit and Oliver’s extended topic in the second half of the show, once again featured a montage of local newscasters.
Regular viewers of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” know that “And Now” montages frequently poke fun at how newscasts around the country report on current events. For example, in June, an “And Now” segment titled “People on TV want you to know this is no laughing matter” dredged up a much-mocked Oregon Health Authority video from 2020, which featured an official dressed as a clown, and delivering somber advice about how to celebrate Halloween safely in the midst of the pandemic.
The “Last Week Tonight” Aug. 18 “And Now” segment was titled, “Newscasters come to terms with life after the Olympics.”
As usual, there was footage of newscasters from stations around the country making remarks that “Last Week Tonight” found ripe for humor. And once again, there was an Oregon angle.
The montage included a moment from “KGW News at Sunrise,” and featured co-anchor Chynna Greene, flanked by fellow anchor Drew Carney, and weather anchor Rod Hill.
“I don’t know about you guys,” Greene said, “but I’m kind of sad the Olympics are over. It was so much fun.”
“There were some personal benefits to the Olympics,” Carney said, “like, we didn’t have a 30-minute news program for two straight weeks.”
Even with that gentle jab, the KGW morning crew came off better than a female anchor from another station, who mused that the Olympics are one of the things that temporarily unites everybody and then added, “Now we can go back to hating each other.”
The segment came to an end with a Los Angeles newscaster opining about all the emotions she felt while watching the Olympics. Then she matter-of-factly segued to a story that was most definitely unrelated: “All right,” she said, “this morning, crews have removed the massive whale carcass that washed ashore on Torrance Beach this weekend.”
