Mirabai Chanu, silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics, will want to repeat her superb performance and return home with a medal. She could become the first weightlifter from India to win two Olympic medals.
Also in gold medal contention is Vinesh Phogat who stunned Japan’s Yui Susaki in the round of 16 bout. The Japanese wrester had an 82-0 internation record before facing Vinesh and had won gold in Tokyo without dropping a point. Vinesh will face Sarah Hildebrandt of the USA in the final.
In athletics, Avinash Sable will aim to make a big impact in the men’s 3000m steeplechase final. He will be up against quality opponents but Sable will push to improve his personal best and surprise many in the ranks.
There are also multiple athletic qualification events throughout the day. Sarvesh Kushare will feature in men’s high jump qualification, Jyothi Yarraji will be in action in women’s 100m hurdles heats and later in the day, Praveen Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker will aim to qualify for the final in men’s triple jump.
In table tennis, the Indian women’s team comprising of Sreeja Akula, Manika Batra and Archana Kamath face Germany for a place in the semifinal of the team event. India, 11th seed in the tournament, had defeated Romania to qualify for the quarters and will fight now against fifth seeds Germans.
