PARIS — Anthony Hernandez remembers the exact moment he knew everything had changed for his New Jersey family. It was in the moments immediately after the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials in 2016, while he was waiting to find out if his 16-year-old daughter, Laurie, had made the team for the Rio Games that summer.

The selection committee had gone behind closed doors to make its final decision, and suddenly, it wasn’t the telegenic Laurie who was front and center on NBC’s wall-to-wall coverage. It was the nervous dad in the crowd, and as those minutes ticked by like hours, he looked down at his phone to find a pleading text from his brother.
