Raygun, the Australian breakdancer whose real name is Rachael Gunn, has absolutely broken the internet with responses to her performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
While she may have not secured a medal, she certainly made waves with her unique performance at the games on Friday, August 9. Some of her moves included a unique sideways hop, which many referred to as a “kangaroo dance,” and sliding around on the floor in a circle.
While some critics were quick to call out her performance, Gunn has seemingly remained unfazed. “It is such an honor and a privilege to be, you know, one of sixteen women from around the world competing in breaking’s debut at the Olympics,” she shared in an Instagram video before her performance.

Raygun competed in three rounds of the Round Robin portion, where she faced tough competition from elite b-girls, ultimately placing 16th in the event.
The 36-year-old’s journey to the Olympics began through her husband, Samuel Free, who introduced her to the sport. Before breaking, she had a background in jazz and ballroom dancing, as per her Olympic profile.
Although her performance earned her zero points against competitors from the U.S., France, and Lithuania, it quickly went viral, garnering both criticism and praise. Some appreciated her creativity, while others took to social media to mock her moves.
Despite the mixed reactions, Raygun stood firm, proud of what she brought to the stage. “I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best — their power moves,” she told ESPN after her performance. “What I bring is creativity.”

RayGun is millennial excellence:
– Useless graduate degree
– Intense interest in an activity most would feel she is too old for
– In competition with Gen Z because there were no opportunities when she was younger https://t.co/3nsrvVnV9J— Brenden Gallagher (@brendengallager) August 9, 2024
