Anthropic has come out with a brand-new model that’s helping to push the limits on what this company’s products can do.

Namely, Anthropic’s 3.5 Haiku ups the ante on system specifications and the ability to use a model for next-level tasking.

Vendors are hopping on board, too: for example, there’s this from Amazon about how to use Haiku on Amazon Bedrock for developers.

So what are people excited about with this choice?

Here are three major benefits that are attracting users to this cutting-edge model.

Increased Processing Speed

Reportedly, Haiku 3.5 can process 21,000 tokens per second, for prompts under 32,000 tokens.

That makes it faster than many more traditional systems and contributes to quicker and more accurate results.

“Designed for quick responses, Haiku is lightweight and efficient, ideal for projects prioritizing speed over depth,” writes Balaram Sarkar at Nanonets.

“More reasonable and equally or a bit faster than gpt3.5,” writes a poster with the handle ‘gizia’. “I’m using it instead of Github Copilot for code refactoring and editing. Additionally, it’s cheap.”

Haiku 3.5 and Tool Use

Generally speaking, new Anthropic models are able to improve on how the system uses computer tools.

Some of the biggest news late this year was Claude’s ability to use a computer in a way that’s similar to a human user. In other words, where older systems had operated digitally inside an operating system, Claude can sit down at a laptop and use the mouse and keyboard.

Specifically, reviewers cite three separate tools – a computer tool that can look at a screenshot and return results showing mouse and keyboard actions, a text editor tool for viewing file contents, and editing, and a ‘bash’ tool that generates commands to run on a computing system.

We can see from internal documentation how Haiku and related models allow for better use of hardware, better agentic AI, and SWE-bench verified metrics for task completion.

Navigating websites, moving the mouse cursor, and typing? These new models can do it all, meaning that they can operate with very little human supervision.

Safety with New Models

Claude 3.5 Haiku and 3.5 Sonnet can also refuse a lot of harmful prompts.

Evaluating these systems, researchers found a high benchmark for staying focused on tasks and weeding out potentially problematic inputs.

“We conducted comprehensive Trust & Safety (T&S) evaluations across fourteen policy areas in six languages: English, Arabic, Spanish, Hindi, Tagalog, and Chinese,” write spokespersons. “Our assessment paid particular attention to critical areas such as Elections Integrity, Child Safety, Cyber Attacks, Hate and Discrimination, and Violent Extremism. T&S Red Teaming finds that the overall harm rates for the upgraded Claude 3.5 Sonnet are similar to, but slightly improved over, those of the original Claude 3.5 Sonnet model. Claude 3.5 Haiku showed improvement in harm reduction compared to Claude 3 Haiku, particularly in non-English prompts, and demonstrated equivalent or improved performance in high-priority policy areas such as Election Integrity, Hate and Discrimination, and Violent Extremism.”

Then there’s a better rate for human assessments of the systems.

All of this is another feather in Anthropic’s cap as the AI race continues to heat up.

Haiku 3.5 and Cost-Effectiveness

Some have argued that recent price changes make Claude 3.5 Haiku and related models less competitive in pricing. Still, with one dollar per million input tokens, and five dollars per million output tokens, the model is still pretty affordable for enterprise projects.

That’s a little bit about Haiku 3.5 as this model comes online this month. Many developers and others are excited about its potential, but it takes place in the context of a lot of new developments – hardware, reasoning models, things like chain of thought, and in those real-world applications to enterprise.
