The 2024 Paris Olympics are in full swing and the fireworks continued on Tuesday, with Team USA securing (and surpassing) its 3,000th medal in Olympic competition.
Team USA’s women’s gymnastics team headlined the day, winning the gold medal in the team competition behind Simone Biles’ incredible comeback after withdrawing from the Tokyo Games. And while you don’t win medals for team names, Team USA should for this one.
Elsewhere in Paris, the U.S. women’s rugby team secured a bronze medal — its first ever in Olympic competition — after upsetting Australia 14-12. In the pool, Australia’s Kaylee McKeown edged Team USA’s Regan Smith to win gold in the women’s 100-meter backstroke on Tuesday. Smith took silver, while fellow American Katharine Berkoff won bronze. Bobby Finke also settled for silver in the men’s 800-meter freestyle here, as he was unable to chase down Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen.
Here’s where the medal count stands going into competition on Wednesday, July 31.
